History of Holy Cross

Archbishop John Mark Gannon canonically created a new Catholic parish for Fairview on May 24, 1963. The new parish was named Holy Cross and Father Frederick P. Reilly appointed as its first pastor. The first Mass in the parish was celebrated on Sunday, June 9, 1963, in the Odd Fellows building on Main Street in Fairview. Following this first parish celebration of Eucharist, members of the new community spent long hours preparing the former Methodist church at 37 West Water Street as a more permanent home.

It was here that the community first gathered on July 7, 1963.  The old Methodist church, which was over one hundred years old, seated two hundred people. The former Sunday School rooms were converted into a parish office, sacristy, and living quarters for Father Reilly. Because the parish grew so rapidly, it soon became necessary to schedule five Masses each Sunday.

In less than a year, the growth of the community precipitated a plan of action to provide larger space for worship and add educational space. Archbishop Gannon, who had approved Father Reilly's purchase of sixteen acres on West Ridge Road, also approved the construction of a combination church and center on the new site. The architectural firm of Hallgren, Restifo and Loop designed the new building budgeted at $235,000.

Father Reilly broke ground for the new center on May 23, 1965. It would contain a worship/auditorium space for 500 people, a daily Mass chapel, eight classrooms and a fully equipped kitchen. Holy Cross Center, later renamed Reilly Center, was dedicated October 31, 1966.

In June of 1977, a capital drive for funds for a new church was begun. Almost three years later, Father Reilly suffered a severe heart attack, ultimately necessitating his retirement as pastor of Holy Cross in the summer of 1982. Sadly, he did not live to see his dream of a new church fulfilled. He was called home to God on November 29, 1983.

Father Dan Dymski was appointed pastor November 9, 1982. At the direction of Bishop Michael Murphy, a period of research and study was scheduled to plan for a new church. On September 30, 1984, ground was broken for the first post Vatican II church to be constructed in the Diocese of Erie.  Holy Cross Church has become a model for liturgical, communal celebration. The cornerstone was laid May 26, 1985. Mass was celebrated for the first time November 15, 1985. The new structure was dedicated Sunday, April 27, 1986.

Father Tom Dugan was appointed the third pastor of Holy Cross in March of 1994. Father Dugan saw Holy Cross into the 21st Century, refurbishing Reilly Center's education wing and adding several pieces of artwork, so we have a beautiful church in which to celebrate Eucharist.

Fr. Scott P. Detisch, Ph.D. was appointed to lead Holy Cross as its fourth pastor in June, 2007. Father Scott has initiated many faith formation programs for adults, building on core Catholic values and teachings. Contact the office or check the bulletin for upcoming events.
